Moorside has been awarded "Specialist Schools Status" in Mathematics and Computing.

Schools minister Lord Andrew Adonis congratulated us on achieving Specialist Status.

Elizabeth Reid, Chief Executive of the Specialist Schools and Academies Trust said: " Having specialist status is an excellent achievement"

Following the recent announcement that Moorside High School is to become a Mathematics and Computing College from September of this year, many parents of year 5 and year 6 pupils have contacted the school with regard to changing their preference to our school.

We are pleased to be able to inform parents that we have a limited number of places available for entry into year 7 for this September intake.

Should you wish to change your preference at this stage, please inform the Local Authority Admissions Office as soon as possible or alternatively, please contact the school to make an appointment to see the Headteacher.

Although the other groups are oversubscribed, we do have some places available in years 8 and 9 for this September, please contact the school if you would like to discuss entry.

Mathematics and ICT are both high performing departments in the school and are role models for other subject areas and for other schools locally and nationally.  Moorside High recently gained a national award from the Specialist Schools and Academies Trust for the high quality of teaching and learning in ICT.

Moorside High School has kept with the vision of core skills of Mathematics, English and ICT being at the heart of a good curriculum.  Of these three core areas we based our bid around the high performing areas of Mathematics and Computing.  The school was unable to highlight the excellent work done in English through this specialist bid, even though 60 % of the present Year 11 have already passed GCSE English Language six months early.

We have gained local and national recognition for the ICT programme and the web site is regularly used by over 500 schools nationwide.  This resource has been made available free to any school across the country and it recently passed over 4 million hits for the GCSE materials it makes available.  Web address www.ictpro.org

The examination board has highlighted the ICT department for its innovative and exceptional practice in marking and monitoring procedures.

Mathematics has risen 20% over two years in the A*-C pass rate, this is underpinned by high quality teaching.

ICT last year had 100% pass rate with 97 pupils gaining A grade at GCSE.  This high quality teaching and the high quality learning materials will see even more ‘A’ grades this year, many now taking two GCSE’s in ICT.

Moorside High School will be the only school in Salford to have its major Specialism in Mathematics and Computing.  There are presently only 240 specialist Mathematics and Computing schools out of the 3367 maintained secondary schools in England.  To put this into some perspective there are over 600 Technology specialist schools and over 475 specialist arts schools, of which Salford has 3.  There are 8 specialist schools in Salford.

Welcome to the recently redesigned Moorside High School website which I hope you will find helpful with regards to general information and enlightening with regard to school activities and achievements.

We are a school which is “purpose driven”. Pupils and their needs are of prime importance and set the agenda for our work.

At the heart of our values is the firm belief that all students should receive an education which not only enables them to reach their full potential academically but also enriches them physically, morally, socially and spiritually.

While academic results are only one measure of a school’s performance we are proud of the fact that in 2005 our 5 A*-C results rose by 10% and in 2006 the core subjects showed a further marked increase in performance with 7 out of 10 students gaining an A*-C grade in English including one in four pupils achieving A* or A, and almost 6 out of 10 gaining an A*-C in Maths. In 2007, our results rose to 53% of pupils gaining 5 or more GCSE's at grades A* to C. The government have told schools that the 5 A* to C must include mathematics and english language, 44% of our pupils achieved that target. 82 pupils gained 8 GCSE's at A* to C, this represents a third of the year group with 51 pupils gaining 10 aty C and above.

Our focus on excellence in the core is linked closely to the “purpose driven” nature of the school and is designed to ensure that when students leave Moorside they have examination results which reflect the high expectations of further education and the workplace.

Integral to the school’s plans for the future is the forthcoming bid for Specialist College Status. This will use one of our core strengths, mathematics, linked with ICT, to develop the school as a centre of Enterprise, Maths & ICT, so that students will have an exceptionally firm foundation for life in the workplace in the 21st Century.

Our website can only give you an overview of the school’s activities and I would offer you a warm invitation to visit the school when it is in session so that you can experience the sense of purpose which drives everything we strive to do.

The Purpose Driven School

At Moorside we are striving to become a centre of excellence within our community where all associated with the school will play their part in developing it as a centre of learning and where the learning needs of everyone associated with the school are at the forefront of our work.

We aim to develop a successful learning culture, based on high expectations, where mutual respect and teamwork will support the quality of teaching and learning which is at the heart of our drive towards school improvement.

The Reputation Of Moorside High School Is Its Best Introduction

For over 60 years it has served the local community, during which time its high standards of achievements, dress and behaviour have been maintained. Situated on a compact site, bordering the East Lancashire Road, Moorside High School has the advantage of being a large school with an extensive range of specialist facilities which offers an education combining traditional values with a well-resourced modern approach. The school has two main buildings, Broadbent and Trevor, both surrounded by fenced playground areas. In the middle of the site lie the dining and sports halls. The playing fields are situated across the East Lancashire Road adjacent to Moorside Primary School, and reached by a safe subway access. The buildings have recently been internally refurbished throughout. In addition Capital Building programmes have provided an improved main hall, drama studio, dining room, food technology rooms, toilets and a new security fence. Adjacent to the school is the Salford City Learning Centre and this provides additional state of the art resources for ICT.
